Since 1981, Operation Nightwatch has been providing radical hospitality to alleviate the isolation experienced by those living on the streets. We also distribute essential items and offer drop in mental health support to those who request it. Our hospitality center is one of the few open at this time of night, when resources and connection are hard to come by. Our volunteers are essential to providing the services we offer - be it coffee and a meal, a blanket and socks, or conversation and connection.
By distributing a hot meal we are able to meet our guest’s basic physical need for food and energy; but perhaps a bit more difficult to come by - we invite our guests to take part in a nurturing community. This meaningful connection helps to provide hope and restore dignity to many of our community members. On a weekend evening, as many as 100 people swing by our hospitality center in search of a hot cup of coffee and a meal. We depend on volunteers to make this service possible. Perhaps it could be you!
We are currently offering off-site volunteer programs as well as our more limited direct service opportunities. We understand that our late evenings can make it difficult for some people to make it to our hours of operation, so we have created opportunities for those who can help us remotely and on their own time.
For more information on how you can help, please email us at info@operationnightwatch.org or call our program manager, Susan, at (503) 893-4568.

At Operation Nightwatch, volunteers play an important role to those who come through our doors each night - and not just through serving coffee and distributing essential supplies. Social connection is at the heart of our mission, and we strive to provide our guests with radical hospitality through each interaction. Three nights a week we provide a comfortable atmosphere for guests to socialize over a cup of coffee, connect with their greater community of unhoused and housed folks alike, cultivate friendships…and probably beat you at Scrabble.
